From 2008-2018, Nicole Laby put Frances8 on hold and pursued a new direction. She formed WaterSaw, a company that composed music for modern dance choreography. Bay Area modern dance choreographers hired WaterSaw to write the scores for their productions. WaterSaw created five full length albums and several individual songs for various modern dance companies over these ten years. Mark Fassett and Michael Tornatore, long standing members of Frances8, were also members of WaterSaw. WaterSaw won the 2013 Isadora Duncan award for Outstanding Achievement in Music, Sound and Text.
“WaterSaw is a compilation of musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area directed by singer-songwriter Nicole Laby. Their music is specifically composed for modern dance choreography and film scores. Creating layers of sound through loopers (recording devices) and utilizing classical instruments with a non-conventional approach, their music is rich with intricate textures and originality. WaterSaw’s music varies depending on the choreography and content. It ranges from rhythmic and driving to spacious and ethereal. WaterSaw composed music for the following Bay Area choreographers: Lizz Roman & Dancers, Bandaloop, Megan Lowe, Sonsheree Giles, BiancaCabrera, and Abigail Hosein. WaterSaw won the 2013 Isadora Duncan award for Outstanding Achievement in Music, Sound and Text.”
